About the event

Lunchtime Talk | Matt Testoni, Marine scientist, Environment Tasmania
Join marine scientist and underwater photographer Matt Testoni for a talk about one of the world’s most endangered marine species, the Maugean Skate. Endemic to Tasmania and dating back 60 million years, the Maugean Skate is now found only in Macquarie Harbour on the island’s remote west coast. Once also recorded in Bathurst Harbour, its future is now in jeopardy due to habitat degradation, industrial pollution, and other environmental pressures.

In this talk, Matt will cover the unique ecology of this ancient species, the critical threats it faces—from declining oxygen levels to the impacts of salmon farming—and the efforts underway to prevent its extinction. Drawing on recent research and his involvement in local conservation campaigns, Matt will also discuss how Tasmanians can play a vital role in protecting the Maugean Skate and safeguarding the natural heritage of our wild island state.

Matt Testoni is a marine scientist, science communicator, underwater photographer and SCUBA diver based in nipaluna/Hobart. With a passion for Tasmania’s extraordinary underwater ecosystems, Matt dedicates much of his time to exploring and documenting the marine world, using photography and storytelling to foster deeper connections between people and marine life. Through his work with Environment Tasmania and other organisations, Matt aims to inspire community action and raise awareness of the urgent conservation issues facing our oceans.
